Walking orientation randomness metric (WORM) score: pilot study of a novel gait parameter to assess walking stability and discriminate fallers from non-fallers using wearable sensors.

This study introduces a novel gait analysis metric the WORM to assess walking stability in fallers and non-fallers using wearable sensors. WORM focuses on trunk motion during walking, particularly the ‘figure-of-eight’ pattern, which is indicative of pathological gait patterns associated with falls. Gait analysis of 16 fallers and 16 non-fallers showed significantly higher WORM scores in fallers. WORM demonstrates high discriminative performance for identifying fall risk, suggesting its potential for clinical evaluation and intervention.
